Drotske replaces Kruger as Bulls captain

Springbok hooker Naka Drotske is to replace injured captain Ruben Kruger at the helm of the Northern Bulls until the Springbok flanker returns from injury.

Kruger broke a bone in his foot on Saturday in the Bulls' match against the Cats at Minolta Loftus in Pretoria - a game the Bulls lost 19-23. He should be ready for the Bulls' game against the Sharks on April 1. Drotske is an experienced campaigner who has captained amongst others the Cats and Free State.

Unfortunately for the Bulls, Kruger was not the only casualty of Saturday's bruising encounter. Fullback Jorrie Kruger is out for a week after taking a knock on the shoulder. Other players that did not train on Monday were fullback/winger Marius Goosen, winger Wim Meyer, flyhalf Jannie de Beer and prop Os du Randt. All are expected to be fit for Saturday's game against the NSW Waratahs in Pretoria.

Injured Springbok lock Wium Basson, who has a niggling thigh injury, will be available for the Bulls' next match against the Stormers in Cape Town on March 11. Winger Paul Treu is also still out with a shoulder injury he sustained in a Bulls warm-up match against North West.

Coach Heyneke Meyer is expected to announce the team for the Waratahs on Thursday. He is still undecided on who will replace the two Krugers, but Russell Nelson and Piet Joubert should come into the reckoning on the flank, while Goosen will probably move from left-wing to fullback.

Meyer will also have to ponder the vital scrumhalf position. Contenders are Bennie Nortje, Stanley Raubenheimer and Deon de Kock.
