England rugby coach Clive Woodward said on Tuesday that former captain Martin Johnson would have to show top-class form on his return from injury if he was to regain his place in the side.

The 29-year-old lock, who captained the British Lions to a superb 2-1 Test series win over South Africa in 1997 and England in last year's World Cup, is set to return to action with the Leicester second team on Wednesday after an 11-week lay-off with concussion and Achilles tendon injury.

"Johnno has got to get back in the team on merit," Woodward said.

"He won't get back in until I see him play for Leicester better than either Simon Shaw or Garath Archer are performing at the moment.

"He is playing for Leicester seconds tomorrow night, and we'll go from there. He won't walk back into the team until I see him have a big game for Leicester."
