Argentine refs to be sponsored
Buenos Aires
March 9, 2000

Argentine rugby is still amateur. But professionalism is stirring. The big news now is coming from the refereeing side, because the Buenos Aires Rugby Union (URBA) closed yesterday a one season deal with Volkswagen to have 3 logos on the referee's jerseys. writes Pablo Mamone

The company will give around 80,000 dollars to the URBA for a full sponsorship package where part of that is for referees.

People from the local referees association (ARURBA) are delighted with the contract but said that is not enough to give funds to the affiliates. "First we must buy equipment and make others investments" said ARURBA secretary Ricardo Etchebere.

At the moment all Argentine refs are completely amateur. They pay for their official clothes, annual fee and petrol money. So now at least they can realise one dream: free jerseys.
