Veteran Scottish winger Kenny Logan paid the price for three dreadful performances on Thursday when he was dropped from the Six Nations squad to face Wales in Cardiff on March 18.

The 27-year-old, capped 48 times since he made his debut in Australia in 1992, had come under increasing pressure for his place after a series of poor performances which began with the humiliating defeat by newcomers Italy last month when his early missed kicks cost the side dearly. His erratic goal-kicking continued in the thrashing by Ireland, though he scored a try, and the 28-16 defeat by France at Murrayfield last Saturday which led to 21-year-old Chris Paterson taking over the responsibility during the match.

The youngster rose to the challenge, leaving Logan to pin his hopes of selection on his wing performance alone.

However, under-pressure Scotland coach Ian McGeechan has decided instead to draft Glasgow Caledonian's Alan Bulloch and Craig Moir of Northampton into his 22-man squad.

"Kenny has tremendous experience. He was very disappointed but that is what I would expect," McGeechan said.

"He takes his Scotland role very seriously but we needed to try other combinations in the back three and some of the players we are bringing in will change the focus of our play," he added.

Also dropped is Bristol centre Jamie Mayer who started Saturday's game on the bench.

Scrum-half Bryan Redpath and hooker Robert Russell, who both missed Saturday's game through injury, are recalled.

However, Redpath, who started the season as number one choice, faces a stiff fight for a place in the team following Andy Nicol's outstanding display against the French.

Cammy Mather keeps his place in the squad even though Gordon Simpson has almost returned to full fitness.
