Mitchell turns down England's offer
March 15, 2000

England assistant coach John Mitchell has confirmed that he has declined the offer made to him by the RFU and that he will be returning to New Zealand with his family on April 5 to take up a new post with the Waikato Rugby Union.

Mitchell has said that the RFU's offer would have set him up for life, but family and New Zealand rugby issues were more important to him.

'I want to get back into the system in Waikato. There is no better way than starting at the grassroots,' he said.'Naturally I have got All Black coaching ambitions but I'm returning to focus on Waikato.I want to research and develop new skills.A lot of people don't understand that I have been coaching at club and international level every week non-stop for four years.'

The attempt by the RFU was a last ditch effort to keep Mitchell within their structure. He has been a key figure in their revival since the World Cup and they wanted him to work full time with England and also carry on as Wasps club coach.
