IRB mandarins set to rule on eligibility
March 31, 2000

International rugby chiefs were set to announce on Friday whether New Zealand-born Brett Sinkinson and Shane Howarth have a test future for Wales as another Welsh player became embroiled in the eligibility controversy.

Rugby's world governing body, the International Rugby Board (IRB), said on Friday it had now finished its Dublin meeting on the eligibility of the Kiwi pair and Scottish prop David Hilton and would make a statement later in the day.

The Welsh have been accused of failing to check properly on the Welsh links of Howarth and Sinkinson who are no longer in the national squad following the "grannygate" affair.

Doubts were raised whether they had a Welsh-born grandparent as originally believed.
