McLaren to be honoured before Calcutta Cup.
March 31, 2000

The "voice of rugby" in the Northern Hemisphere, Bill McLaren is to be honoured by the Scottish Rugby Union before Sundays final Six Nations match between Scotland and England.
McLarren will be presented with a new award, the Freedom of Scottish Rugby by the SRU's The Princess Royal at Murrayfield in the lead up to the game.
The match will also mark the 75th anniversary of the first International at Murrayfield, and noting both events, SRU President Harvey Wright said: "There is no other sports commentator who is as synonymous with his sport and has done as much to encourage its development as Bill McLaren has with rugby. Rumour has it that Bill is 75-years-young and given our own 75th anniversary we felt it most appropriate for the Scottish Rugby Union to institute a new award to recognise his unique contribution to rugby union. I very much hope supporters will take this opportunity to show Bill their appreciation too."
