World under- 19 Championships : England out, New Zealand ominous

England fell at the first hurdle on Friday evening in their quest to become world under -19 champions. For the second year running they failed to secure a quarter final place, beaten by tournament debutants Australia , 34-17, in Montceau,France. England were outscored 4-2 on tries and never recovered from a 21-3 interval deficit. Australia will now play Ireland, 49-20 conquerors of Romania, at the last eight stage. England can finish no higher than ninth from 16 Group A countries and face a consolation game against Romania on Sunday. Wales, runners-up to New Zealand last year, breezed past Uruguay 43-14, setting up a quarter final showdown with Scotland , who beat Canada 47-13. New Zealand , the defending champions, destroyed 16th seeds Spain 82-0, scoring fourteen tries in the process. Last - eight opponents Argentina promise to be a totally different proposition. |
