New Zealand juniors appeal against semi-final exit
April 22, 2000

New Zealand officals will appeal to the Junior World Cup organisers after their semi-final exit after a controversial penalty shootout loss to Australia.

Australia were awarded the match after they won a goal-kicking shootout by four kicks to three.

But New Zealand coach John Boe says both teams understood the winner would be decided on who had fewer sending offs, and to force the teenagers into a kick-off was unfair.

The match was drawn 5-5 at fulltime. The tournament rules did not allow for extra time.

New Zealand officials thought their side had won through to Sunday's final against France when the match ended in a draw because New Zealand had fewer players yellow-carded during the tournament.

Australia had two players cautioned while New Zealand received one yellow card.

French officials will decide later today on the matter.
