Gladiators put to the sword
May 4, 2000

One of England's many social rugby teams got a little more than they bargained for on a recent end-of-season trek to Romania.

Due to a language mix-up, the over-40s Dorchester Gladiators ended up facing the country's top rugby team Steaua Bucharest watched by thousands and screened nationwide.

The team, whose oldest player is 50, had anticipated playing one of the clubs lower ranked teams but the Romanian lads thought they were coming up against one England's top Allied Dunbar clubs and turned out their best team.

It was a bit of a shock to the Gladiators who had spent the night before preparing as any other social team does by talking team tactics to the early hours in the pub.

The Romanians eased off when they were realised they were no danger of losing, eventually winning 61-17.
