Oxford amateurs show Quins the way

Oxford University overcame a strong Harlequins side 34-17 to win the Rosslyn Park Floodlit Sevens last night at Old Deer Park in South West London.

The Students beat arch-rivals Cambridge University in the semi-final to set up the final against the West London glamour side which featured Chris Sheasby, Brendan Daniel, Jason Keyter and Pat Sanderson.

Looking for something to show for the season Harlequins fielded what looked suspiciously like a full strength team only to see them humiliated by the amateurs from Oxford. It wasn't even close as Quins conceded 34 points although they did score three tries.

The Oxford squad captained by Jamie Weston which featured seven blues was coached by Steve Hill.

Director of rugby Hill said: "we knew we were underdogs going into the final. To have beaten Cambridge in the semi-final was the big one, and the final was just a bonus".

"All credit to Harlequins who picked a strong side, it was good for the tournament as the crowd want to see big names".

"I told the boys before the final to respect them, we were the definite underdogs. Tactically, I told them them to deny Quins time and space, and it paid off".
