Bath have signed promising England A prop David Barnes from Harlequins.

The 23-year-old loosehead has a tough act to follow next season, replacing recently-retired Victor Ubogu, a cult figure at the Recreation Ground.

Barnes, formerly of Newcastle and West Hartlepool, made 24 league and cup appearances for Quins this term.

"David was one of Harlequins' successes this season" said Bath coach Andy Robinson.

"He is a young player who we feel will be a valuable addition to our squad, and will complement the type of team we are trying to build."

Barnes added: "I am delighted to be joining Bath at such an exciting stage of their development.

"I look forward to being part of their quest for honours in both domestic and European competitions."

Bath had hoped to sign Cardiff and Wales prop Andrew Lewis, but that deal fell through, and Barnes now becomes the west country club's third new arrival this month, following Saracens back Rob Thirlby and London Irish forward Mark Gabey.
