Southland's new NPC coach, ex-All Black flanker Leicester Rutledge, has relied on a variety of imports to add depth to his squad.

Graeme Bond and Des Tuiavii have Super 12 experience with the ACT Brumbies, as does lock Brendan Timmins , who is no longer needed in Dunedin after a long career with Otago and the Highlanders.

Hooker Davin Heaps, who played for the Auckland Blues this year and who was on the All Black bench in 1998, is the new skipper and other interesting selections include Manu Samoan flanker Craig Glendinning and New Zealand Colt Clarke Dermody.

This squad will be on a pre-tournament tour this weekend, playing games against Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Taranaki. Brett McCormack , last year's skipper, and Corey Flynn , both currently sidelined because of injury, are expected to be added to the eventual NPC squad.

The Southland squad is :

Mal Arnold, Graeme Bond, Jimmy Cowan, Aaron Dempsey, Clarke Dermody, Pailate Fili, Craig Glendinning, Jason Harrison, Davin Heaps (captain), David Hill, Simon Kerr, Steve Jackson, Aaron Kimura, Anthony Lafaiali'i, Faolua Muliaina, Joe Naufahu, Matt O'Connell, Brendon Pascoe, Andrew Rainsford, Jason Rutledge, Alex Telea,Brendon Timmins, Mark Tinnock, Des Tuiavii.
