IRB reiterates protective clothing rules
August 4, 2000

The International Rugby Board have reiterated that no players can wear protective clothing it does not approve from October 1.

All clothing approved by the IRB will come with a badge with a unique number printed on it.

A consultation process with manufacturers and unions has been completed to ensure control over the thickness of protective clothing including headgear, chest and shoulder padding.

An IRB statement read: "This Standard clearly sets out the procedure for testing products and gaining IRB approval. The Standard applies to all matches played under the jurisdiction of the IRB."

Responsibility for enforcing the new rules will continue to rest with referees and IRB member unions.

"Unions are asked to encourage their coaches and players to uphold and adhere to the spirit and intent of this law," continued the statement.

The list of the approved garments can be found on the IRB website (www.irb.org).
