Scotland bounced back after their loss to South Africa to defeat Wales in the play-off round of the seventh Student World Cup in Rome on Thursday night.

Scotland started brightly, scoring a converted try through Sharples with only two minutes on the clock. Four minutes later Duncan added a penalty goal for a 10-0 lead.

Aberdeen lock Ness extended the lead on 18 minutes with a well worked try. Wales' pride was restored with a tries by full international Darryl Williams, and Newport wing Emyr Lewis.

The second half saw a kicking duel between Duncan and Griffiths, with Dunacn coming out on top with a penalty goal count of four to one in his favour. An excellent try by Worcester centre Morgan was not enough for the Welshmen who eventually lost 30-20.

Scotland's victory over Wales means that Wales go out of the Student World Cup. They have the worst points difference of the three losing play-off sides.

Home side Italy squeezed through to the next round after a great win over Japan 32-29. Itlay had lost their last two games, but put five tries (Saviozzi 2, Bezzi, Carlesso and the international Pucciarello)past a strong Japanese side.

In the last game Uruguay beat Russia 20-14 with tries by Bessio and Brignoni. Russia were in the game all the way, but were unable to capitalise on their solitary try by prop Travkine, and three penalties slotted by full back Simonov.

Japan and Russia go through to the quarter-finals with the three winning sides, Italy Scotland and Uruguay. There they will meet England, France and South Africa, who all qualified by right, winning their respective groups.
