Nicol out of Northampton friendly
August 14, 2000

Glasgow Caledonians captain Andy Nicol will miss Tuesday's friendly against Heineken Cup holders Northampton as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

The Scotland scrum half hopes to be back in action for the visit of Munster to Stirling next Saturday, but fellow test player Glen Metcalfe will not feature in either of the pre-season games as he is still two or three weeks away from fitness after a foot injury.

Three other Scottish caps, Gordon Simpson, James McLaren, and Stewart Campbell will also miss the games against both of last seasons European finalists. Simpson is still in his pre-season build-up, and McLaren, who signed for the Reds earlier this summer after two seasons in France, has only recently returned to Scotland after a holiday in Australia.

Campbell took a slight knock on the Reds' recent tour in Vancouver, as did three other absentees from the trip to Northampton, Lee Harrison, Fraser Stott, and Martin Waite. Alan Bulloch and Rory Kerr also could not be considered because of injury. Colin Stewart is being rested after the Canadian trip whereas three other Reds, Barry Irving, Graeme Kiddie, and Jon Steel, are unavailable as they in Scotland's squad in the Students World Cup.
