Former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio could miss Wasps' opening three Premiership matches.

The Wasps skipper has definitely been ruled out of Saturday's opener against League champions Leicester at Loftus Road because of a recurring groin problem.

And he could also miss appointments with Bath on August 27 and Bristol the following weekend as Wasps take no chances with their star player.

"Lawrence was hoping to be fit for the start of the season, but he just hasn't had a window of opportunity to rest the groin injury, which he had all last year," Wasps rugby director Nigel Melville told the club's website.

"He is still training, but he won't be ready this weekend."

With Dallaglio on the sidelines despite club physios being optimistic about his prospects earlier this week Wasps will have to consider closely their back row options ahead of the Leicester clash.

Dallaglio's obvious replacement, Peter Scrivener, is also on the injury list, facing a six-week lay-off after damaging knee ligaments.

However, Wasps will still be quietly confident of opening their league campaign on a winning note given Leicester's poor pre-season form which produced defeats against Ulster and Cardiff.

As well as Dallaglio and Scrivener, the Londoners must also make do without hooker Trevor Leota (broken leg) and fly half Alex King (shoulder).

Both players are not expected back until late September/early October, paving the way for England hooker Phil Greening to enjoy a clear first team run.

With King out, Wasps delved into the transfer market this summer, recruiting promising youngster Matt Leek from Saracens.
