Shiel warns his side against complacency

Edinburgh Reivers skipper Graham Shiel warned his players not to get carried away with their opening Welsh/Scottish League victory over Ebbw Vale.

The Scotland centre declared: "It was just the start to our campaign that we so badly wanted but were are far from being the finished article.

"We have a particularly tough sequence of matches coming up over the next couple of weeks and we will have to step up our performance by several notches to compete with the likes of Cardiff and Llanelli."

He added: "There were times when we faded a bit and let them come back at us and we never managed to get the sort of control that would have put us well and truly out of sight.

"I was pleased with our continuity. We were keeping the ball for longer periods in the game and that is probably what produced the opportunities for the tries.

"Against some of the bigger sides that sort of continuity will hopefully help give us the upper hand."

Graham Dall, David Officer, Craig Joiner, Cammy Murray and Shiel claimed the Reivers touchdowns, with the remainder of their points being booted by Duncan Hodge.

By contrast, there were early-season alarm bells in the Glasgow Caledonians camp in the wake of their 31-13 crash at lowly Caerphilly.

The Cheesemen went in front after just 25 seconds and the Reds just couldn't recover.

Caley coach Richie Dixon branded the display "totally unacceptable"and insisted said his men had only themselves to blame.

He said: "Losing a try so quickly was obviously a setback, but we should have been able to wipe out the deficit right away.

"We went on to lose the game, not because of what Caerphilly achieved but because of what we didn't achieve."

He added: "We created several gilt-edged opportunities and just didn't take them. When you are playing against a team like them you have to get ahead of them on the scoreboard and stay there.

"They lose heart in that situation, but on this occasion because they kept seeing us wasting our chances, they grew in heart and stature. Over the piece, they were hungrier for it than our guys, which is totally unacceptable."

Caley's points came from a Gordon Simpson try and three kicks by Craig Chalmers.
