Barbarians put Boks to shame
September 21, 2000

While the final match on their end-of-year tour will be just another payday for the Springboks - albeit a hefty one at R70,000 - their opponents, the Barbarians, will be doing it for nothing.

The honour of playing for the Barbarians - and hopefully beating the Boks - was enough to persuade All Blacks' Jonah Lomu, Christian Cullen, Carlos Spencer, Byron Kelleher, Craig Dowd and Norman Maxwell as well as Wallabies' Matthew Burke, Daniel Herbert, Richard Harry, David Giffin and Owen Finegan to take on the Boks on December 10 in Cardiff.

The Boks asked for an increase of R40,000 on their match fee because of another "Test" match effectively being added to their matches against Argentina, Ireland, Wales and England.

The Bok management, of which a certain member ironically accused the SA Rugby Football Union of "greed", also asked for R70,000 each to sit in the stands.

Barbarian coach Bob Dwyer said: "I've been involved with three World XVs and three Barbarians teams over the years and not once has any player mentioned money to me."
