NPC : Meeuws dropped by Otago

All Black tight head prop Kees Meeuws finds himself on the subs' bench for the visit of Southland to Carisbrook on Saturday afternoon.

The whole Otago side was heavily criticised by coach Kevin Gloag following his side's defeat to Taranaki last weekend. Meeuws' demotion is one of four changes to the side that played in New Plymouth.

This is a serious setback to the big prop. During the Tri Nations series, the front row efforts of Meeuws and his Otago colleagues Anton Oliver and Carl Hoeft came under close scrutiny and were at times heavily criticised. The sight of the Otago front three being shunted backwards by their Taranaki counterparts will not have impressed All Black coach Wayne Smith. He will be selecting a squad to tour France and Italy shortly and must be concerned by the loss of form of a number of his squad members.

The full Otago side is :

Justin Swart, Brendan Laney, Seilala Mapusua, Hayden Reid, Pita Alatini, Tony Brown, Donovan Hall, Kelvin Middleton ( captain ), Josh Kronfeld, John Blaikie, Simon Maling, Taine Randell, Carl Hayman, Anton Oliver, Carl Hoeft.

Reserves : James Jowsey, Charles Hore, Chad Shepherd, Josh Blackie, Hale Tu'uhoko, Kees Meeuws, Tom Willis.
