CC: Sharks off to a great start
September 25, 2000

The Natal Sharks launched their Top Eight campaign in emphatic style with a 49-13 (halftime 27-5) victory over the Vodacom Eagles at Absa Stadium on Friday night.

The Sharks scored seven tries against an outclassed Eagles to take maximum points and move to the top of the standings before Saturday's round of matches. The home side collected the bonus point for scoring four tries before the halftime interval and plainly dropped their pace after the interval.

The Eagles were more competitive in the second half, but the heat had gone out of the game and the Sharks showed they had the measure of their opponents with prop Ollie le Roux barging over from close range in the final few moments to inflate the scoreline.

The win moved the Sharks to 16 points with three games remaining - two points clear of their most fancied rivals Western Province, and seven clear of the Lions, who each have four games remaining.

Scorers:

Natal Sharks - Tries: Rodger Smith, AJ Venter, Albert van den Berg, Trevor Halstead, Warren Brosnihan, Ollie le Roux (2). Conversions: Gaffie du Toit (4). Penalty: Du Toit. Drop goal: Terblanche.

Vodacom Eagles - Try: Rickus Lubbe, Daryl Coeries. Penalty: Rynhard van As.
