Williams eyes quick return

Neath and Wales winger Shane Williams could be back in action by the New Year after his suspected broken leg was diagnosed as ankle ligament damage on his return to Wales.

The 23 year old sustained the injury in The All Blacks 55-17 defeat at the hands of Montferrand in Saturday's European Shield opener and initial fears were that he would be out for the remainder of the season.

"We were all fearing the worst after Shane was taken off the field on Saturday night. The doctors were convinced he had broken his leg," said Neath coach Lyn Jones. "Shane was in a lot of pain and he had to have his leg put in a splint, use crutches and take pain killers. It looked as though we were going to lose him for much of the rest of the season."

The lesser injury will mean a break of up to six weeks and Jones believes he will be back in contention for the Six Nations Championship, which starts with the visit of England to Cardiff in early February.

"His rehabilitation will begin on Monday morning with his first course of intensive physiotherapy and I'm hoping he might be back in action for us when we take on Llanelli on December 5," said Jones. "Shane is a class act and he is very important to everyone at Neath so we hope he gets back to his best as soon as possible."
