All Blacks survive early scare
World Cup Sevens
January 26, 2001

England were not alone in making an unspectacular start with group rivals New Zealand embarrassingly going behind to an early try before beating Spain 26-7.

Ferran Velazco grabbed the early score that brought the biggest cheer of the opening afternoon at the stadium, built when Argentina hosted the 1978 football World Cup.

But the All Blacks, the reigning Commonwealth champions who left Jonah Lomu on the bench until the second half, responded with two quick tries before adding two more after the break.

In the other group game, Zimbabwe, who were expected to be one of the surprise contenders after a recent victory over South Africa, were beaten 17-12 by Japan.
