Welsh hopes shattered by the Aussies
World Cup Sevens
January 26, 2001
Welsh hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the Melrose Cup suffered a blow as they were beaten 24-5 by Australia in their second Group D encounter. The Australians may not have included any of their World Cup winners. But they are a specialist sevens outfit, and it showed as they grabbed four more tries. Sam Payne struck the first blow after Wales conceded a short-range penalty, with Brendan Williams quickly adding a second. But coach Colin Hillman's team again refused to concede defeat, and moments after the restart Bristol's Gareth Baber picked up a loose ball and sprinted 25 metres for a try. Australia hit back with Payne's second try before replacement Tim Donnelly chipped ahead, won the race for the ball and kicked on to seal victory. |
