English chances dented by Spain

England's hopes of reaching the quarter-finals then suffered a massive blow as they slumped to a shock 14-12 defeat by Spain in their final game of the opening day.

Saracens' Kris Chesney had given England the perfect start when he forced his way over from close range, but Spain hit back with a converted try from Jorge Prieto.

England looked to have regained command when Sackey raced clear from the half-way line to score with Sampson's conversion with the last kick of the first-half putting them ahead.

But England were unable to add to their tally after the break and a momentary lapse in concentration allowed Oriol Ripol to steal through the defence to score.

Ferran Velazco's conversion took them ahead with a couple of minutes ahead and England were unable to respond with Spain raising their arms in delight at the final whistle.
