In a day of upsets at the Wellington Sevens, the USA claimed their major scalp and the Cook Islanders upset the fancied South Africans.

Having earlier beaten Fiji, the reigning champions, the USa then sceured their quarter final place by beating England, 17-12. They proved to have too much pace out wide and had clearly been well prepared, building upon their World Cup success.

Then the minnows of the Cook Islands delighted the large crowd by comfortably beating South Africa , 17-7. Having moved into a 14-7 interval lead, the Cooks then won a tight second half battle, the only score coming through a dropped goal.
