Fiji considering axeing sevens side
May 7, 2001

Fiji, once the stars and creators of the rugby sevens, are considering quitting the international competition, the New Zealand Herald has reported in its Tuesday edition.

Fiji Rugby Football Union chief executive Bob Chancellor said their debts meant they would no longer be able to take part in the International Rugby Board sevens competition.

"I have grave doubts ... we would be able to participate in the full series
next year," he said.

Fiji instead wanted to focus on the 2003 World Cup as a means of raising
the 15-a-side team's international rankings.
