Ankle op rules Macdonald out
May 10, 2001

Crusaders fullback Leon MacDonald will miss Saturday's Super 12 clash against the Highlanders in Carisbrook after undergoing ankle surgery in Christchurch on Thursday.

MacDonald, an All Black last year, had a minor operation to remove a cyst from his right ankle. The cyst formed after he suffered a severe ankle sprain during last year's NPC. The injury had been causing him pain during the Super 12, particularly when he kicked the ball.

Crusaders coach Robbie Deans said MacDonald could have played against the Highlanders, but with the defending championships out of contention there were longer term benefits for MacDonald to have the surgery. "The extra recovery time ensures Leon is ready for the start of the All Blacks campaign," Deans said.
