Mather hits back at Reivers
May 10, 2001

Scotland international Cammy Mather insists he was driven out of Edinburgh Reivers after being branded a troublemaker.

Worcester forward Mather, like some other senior professionals, had been unhappy with the management style of Ian Rankin and voiced their thoughts to Reivers chief executive Nick Oswald.

The players also saw SRU director of rugby Jim Telfer but Mather believes he was ``sold upstream'' by the rugby authorities.

``I went to see Oswald at the end of last season and said I was interested in going part-time as I wanted to plan ahead for a career after rugby,'' Mather told the Scottish Daily Mail.

``I was a bit concerned about hitting 30 at the end of my contract and having no long-term prospects.

``I had been offered a job which would help me take those first steps into business and I was seriously considering taking it.

``I went to him in confidence but, the next thing I knew, I had an attitude problem.

``Basically I got sold upstream, after myself and Graham Shiel had taken the senior guys to see Jim Telfer about Rankin, I thought we had achieved something.

``But I was amazed to see Rankin return in an even stronger position than before.''
