Three Boks lose contracts
May 31, 2001

Three of Harry Viljoen's initial squad of contracted national players have been relieved of their contracts. New additions will be confirmed after the completion of the national training camp currently in progress.

Butch Watson Smith, the South African Rugby Football Union's (Sarfu) general manager of national teams (which includes the Springbok Business Unit) on Thursday morning announced that Stefan Terblanche, Grant Esterhuizen and Warren Brosnihan were the unfortunate trio to miss out on an extension of their January contracts.

Gavin Passens, contracted in January but yet to play a game this season because of injury, has had his contract extended until 31 August. This is in keeping with the relevant contract injury clause.

Pieter Rossouw, Braam van Straaten, Werner Swanepoel, Charl Marais and AJ Venter will still be contracted, but on a reduced rate. Their situation will be reviewed at the end of August and October.

Non-contracted players currently attending the training camp will be paid a one-off fee for their participation. A non-contracted player selected for the Test 26 to play France on June 16 will be offered a contract, backdated from the 1st June. This contract will run until the end of the year and will include a review at the end of August.

The contracts are graded A1 - C3 and a player can move up, down or out at each review period.

The non-contracted players at the camp are Dean Hall, Wayne Julies, Adrian Jacobs, De Wet Barry, Butch James, Charl van Rensburg, Neil de Kock, Francois Swart, Bob Skinstad and Lucas van Biljon.
