Howells looks for positives in tour defeat
June 3, 2001

Wales' head coach Lynn Howells said it was the worst possible way for his players to start off their Far East trip following the 45-41 defeat by top club side Suntory.

"Nobody wants to start a tour in this way," admitted Howells. The Wales boss said that the heat had been a factor but did not want to detract from the performance of the hosts. "You have got to give credit to Suntory, the way they played," said Howells. "The way Suntory developed the ball at the ruck and maul was definitely a factor. They are a credit to Japanese rugby.

Howells reiterated his faith in his young team despite defeat in Tokyo. "There was a big difference from the change of personnel. We'll get better as the tour goes on. One or two of the players need more time." Despite the defeat, Swansea fly-half Gavin Henson showed promise for the future with confident ball handling and kicking. "Gavin had a very good game, but he's 18, he needs time to come through," said Howells.

"This won't affect our preparation for the Test matches. The first two games are a chance for players to put their hands up for the tests"

Winger Gareth Thomas said playing in that type of heat was a new experience for him at the 15-a-side game. "I've played in this kind of heat before but only sevens rugby, never the 15-a-side game before," said Thomas. Centre Stephen Jones said Suntory's performance showed the way forward for Japan's national game.

"If Japan tried to emulate the style of rugby Suntory played they would not be wide of the mark," said Jones. Suntory coach Masato Tsuchida said: "I am very proud of the way my side kept pressing as Wales' game slowed in the heat."
