Roff battling ankle injury
June 7, 2001

Brumbies utility back Graeme Bond has been rushed into the Wallaby squad for Saturday's clash against the Maori with winger Joe Roff struggling with an ankle injury.

Should Roff fail a fitness test on Friday, the Waratahs' Matt Burke will come into the starting side with Bond coming onto the bench for the game at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Burke was forced to the bench after form Brumbies winger Andrew Walker won the starting wing spot alongside Roff. In the other change to the backline, Reds five-eighth Elton Flatley was selected at inside-centre as a replacement for the injured Stirling Mortlock. Flatley will take the kicks, but there is no shortage with four other recognised kickers in the 22-man squad.

The only uncapped player in the starting side is Reds loosehead prop Nick Stiles, while Brumbies prop Ben Darwin will start from the bench. Brumbies hooker Jeremy Paul finally gets his chance to start a game ahead of the Reds' Michael Foley.

Only seven players who started Australia's last Test against England in November - Chris Latham, Daniel Herbert, Roff, Toutai Kefu, George Smith, John Eales and David Giffin - were named today. Halves George Gregan and Stephen Larkham were not part of the tour due to injury.

Wallaby coach Rod Macqueen confirmed the side would be close to the one that ran out against the Lions in the First Test at the Brisbane's Gabba on June 30.

"It's an indicator of form at this time," Macqueen said. "Burkey's not far off. The last five games Walker played, he was exceptional and he earned his spot.

"That's one of the good messages we can put out. If you play well enough, you're going to be able to get a spot even if there's someone as good as Matt Burke who's played very well. We're giving Walker the chance he deserves."

Wallaby: Chris Latham, Andrew Walker, Daniel Herbert, Elton Flatley, Joe Roff, Stephen Larkham, George Gregan, Toutai Kefu, George Smith, Matt Cockbain, John Eales (capt), David Giffin, Glenn Panoho, Jeremy Paul, Nick Stiles.
