Eagles bolstered by Lyle return
June 7, 2001

The USA Eagles' build-up to their clashes with England 'A' and England were boosted today with the news that No.8 Dan Lyle has been passed fit to play.

Lyle, who missed the Eagles last outing against Uruguay is joined by lock Philippe Farner who will also return from an injury lay-off. Fellow lock Luke Gross, scrumhalf Kevin Dalzell and center Jason Keyter will also be available with the European season now concluded.

"We welcome all the experience available to us," said USA head coach Duncan Hall. "We'll face an England squad seasoned by European Cup or test level competition and we need players who are familiar with rugby of a high pace and intensity."

The veterans will likely slot into the test side that faces England in San Francisco on Saturday, June 16, but Hall has also added a number of first-timers as he prepares a team to play England 'A' on Tuesday at UCLA.

The new faces are mainly in the forwards where frontrowers Dan Anderson, Kelly Bellue, Dan Dorsey, Brent Hinz, and Andrew McGarry all get their first chance at international level competition. Locks PJ Sheridan and Adam Russell, along with loose forwards Paul Harpur, Conrad Hodgson, Ryan Rebell and Kevin Whitcher offer the possibility of an entirely untested pack to face the English midweek team. In the backs, the newcomers number just three; flyhalf Terry Gill, center Karl Thomson and wing Marc Vera.

"All of these players have stood out at the club and territorial level," Hall said. "Now they'll have the chance to measure and prove themselves against international opposition. The midweek match is a great opportunity for player development."

Much of the 40-man squad assembles on Saturday to prepare for Tuesday's match, while established test players come to camp on Monday.
