IRB rules in Wales' favour
June 8, 2001

The Welsh Rugby Union have expressed their delight after the International
Rugby Board ruled that Australia are not entitled to compensation for Jason
Jones-Hughes.

Wales convinced the centre to turn his back on a contract with New South Wales
, and a potential career as an Australian international , in order to represent his father's native country.

But the IRB's judicial officer agreed with the WRU that because ,under IRB
regulations ,Jones-Hughes' contract with New South Wales had not expired they were not obliged to compensate the Australian Rugby Union.

WRU secretary Dennis Gethin said: ``The judicial officer has accepted our
submissions in this respect.

``We will of course give careful consideration to the conclusions of the
judicial officer although I should emphasise that the Welsh Rugby Union
considers itself to have acted in an entirely proper fashion in relation to this matter, and also considers that the ARU claims were rightly rejected.''
