Nine French clubs on Saturday banded together to form a body called Pro 1 to represent the rights of first division clubs in negotioations with the French League (LNR).

"There's a players' union, one for coaches and clubs, but we felt the first division had a few things to say too," said Andre Lestorte of first division outfit Pau and who is the first president of Pro 1.

Pro 1 members include Pau, Bordeaux-Begles, Brive, Stade Francais, Castres,
Perpignan, Toulouse, Bourgoin and Narbonne.

Brive, relegated to division two this season, have two years to return to
the top flight if they wish to maintain their membership.
