England slam Canada in second test
June 10, 2001

Simon Shaw and David Walder scored two
tries each and England trounced Canada 59-20 on Saturday in the second test
match of their North American tour.

England, which won last week's opener 22-10, set the pace quickly with two
early tries on the way to a rout.

Shaw emerged from a maul and scored an uncoverted try only two minutes
of the game.

Bob Ross got Canada on the board minutes later with a penalty kick. But
French referee Joel Jutge awarded England a penalty try and Walder's
conversion was true, putting the English ahead 12-3.

Canada's defensive lapses emerged frequently in the game and England
capitalized with their relentless aggressive offense.

Dan Baugh of Canada and Julian White of England were sent off after White
gave a liberal boot to Canada's Rod Snow and Baugh jabbed White to defend his teammate.

Then Morgan Williams was penalized for a professional foul leaving Canada
two men short.

At the half, England led by 28-6 after three penalty kicks and a convert by
Walder, one by Ross and a try by Joe Worsley.

England, which is ranked third in the world, came out strongly in the second
half with Shaw nabbing a second try in the game only minutes after the break.

England continued to dominate play over the next 40 minutes as Canada, ranked 11th in the world, saw its chance quickly fade of repeating the team's lone triumph over England, which came on the same field in 1993.

After returning from the send-off, Baugh slammed down to the line to score
a try which Ross converted to close the point gap to 33-13.

However, England's strong offense took advantage of any shortcomings in
Canada's defense.

Walder broke through the 22-meter line to score a self-converted try and only moments later, he worked his magic again, scoring another try, which he
successfully converted, putting England on top 47-13.

England's Jamie Noon snatched another opportunity and scored a converted
try, leaving Canada's hopes shattered.

Canada fended off some English pressure in the second-half before Martyn
Wood scored an unconverted try.A final push by Canada saw Sean Fauth score a try from a Nik Witkowski pass.
England's third and final tour test will come next Saturday against the
United States in Berkeley, California.
