Viljoen backs Monty's credentials

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen is convinced Percy Montgomery is capable of doing the job for him at flyhalf in the one-off test against Italy in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

Montgomery on Monday was included in the starting line-up after Gaffie du Toit was injured in training.

Viljoen, who named an experimental Test team containing seven changes on Wednesday, said that losing Du Toit was a huge drawback. The Natal Sharks utility back was a late replacement for Butch James, who was suspended for two weeks after a citing commission found him guilty of dangerous tackling in the 20-15 win over France.

"There was a lot of responsibility on Gaffie for Saturday's Test and especially with him kicking, we decided not to take the risk," said Viljoen.

"Percy can do the job at flyhalf," added the coach. Viljoen said he would use this Test as his last opportunity to try new combinations before the Tri-Nations.

"If we don't try things we will never know," he said, adding "we are still experimenting".

Viljoen voiced concern over the goal-kicking situation, saying that he was still looking at all the options. While Montgomery will kick on Saturday, Viljoen said he thought about the option of debutant fullback Conrad Jantjes, but was concerned at his inconsistency over the past four weeks in training.

"There is still a bit of concern over Jantjes's kicking. He has been a bit inconsistent but he does have a good record for the SA under-23s."

Jantjes, along with Neil de Kock, will make their Test debuts, but Viljoen feels both players are ready for the international arena.

"Neil cleans up very well and is quick around the park," said the Bok coach.

Viljoen named Thinus Delport as the left wing in place of Dean Hall, who is struggling with a shoulder injury. "I do believe Thinus needs some game time and his inclusion goes with my policy of playing a big wing for the angle running."

New Bok captain Bob Skinstad will play at No 8 while deposed skipper Andre Vos moves to the openside flank, partnered on the other side of the scrum by Andre Venter.

Viljoen said the reason Rassie Erasmus was not even included on the bench was that he needed some rest.

Skinstad admitted that the Bok's poor disciplinary record against the French was a problem but he said that there was nothing wrong with the players' aggression, adding that they just had to channel it properly.

"I'm not telling them to stop being aggressive," said Skinstad, "they must just focus on going forward and dominating up front."

Skinstad said his relationship with Vos would help strengthen the team, instead of the captaincy issue becoming a problem. "I get on with him and he helps alleviate some of the pressure," said Skinstad. - Sapa
