Johnson hails Corry

Lions captain Martin Johnson has hailed the credentials of his club and country colleague Martin Corry ahead of this weekend's 1st test.

Corry, who was drafted into the touring party, having originally been omitted, after Scotland's Simon Taylor was forced to withdraw with injury. But Johnson believes he was unlucky to miss out on selection originally.

"He is a great player to have on board with his attitude and ability," the lock forward said. "Martin has been unfortunate in terms of the England team, finding himself behind such a quality back-row (Richard Hill, Neil Back and Lawrence Dallaglio), but he fully deserves this chance."

With Back ruled out because of a rib injury, Corry will pack down alongside Hill and Wales number eight Scott Quinnell, who emulates his father Derek in becoming a Test Lion.

"I am absolutely delighted - it is a huge honour in what will be a huge game," said Corry, who captained Bristol before establishing himself as a major cog in Leicester's mightily efficient forward machine.

"But Phil Larder (Lions defence coach) summed it all up. The elation at being selected lasts for five minutes, then you start thinking about the task ahead.

"I cannot let anything detract from my focus. I am happy with my game at the moment but I have got to show that I am worthy of my place.

"Joining the tour late took the pressure off to a certain degree, but it was also a bit of back-to-the-wall stuff that seems to bring the best out of me."
