Sailor on collision course with ARU
June 28, 2001

Wendell Sailor is on a collision course with the Australian Rugby Union after making himself available for Australia's end-of-season rugby league tour of Great Britain - around the same time that he is due to complete his switch to the 15-man code.

It was thought that Sailor, one of the best wingers in world rugby, would not play league after October after agreeing to join Super 12 club Queensland Reds on November 1 as part of an ARU deal.

Both the Wallabies and a Queensland development squad are touring in the autumn and Sailor was expected to be a member of one of the parties.

But he has fuelled speculation over his future by insisting he could play for the Kangaroos on their autumn tour of Britain and Papua New Guinea in October and November.

When asked whether he would be available for the rugby league national side, the Brisbane Broncos star replied: ``Yes, if selected.''

He added: ``At the end of the day I love playing for Australia, but they have a wealth of wingers whether it's Lote (Tuqiri), Adam MacDougall, Nathan Blacklock; they're in good hands.''

ARU bosses have said they want to meet Sailor to discuss his comments.

Sailor has also admitted his attachment to Brisbane, telling the club's official website: ``The more I'm playing with the Broncos, the more I get attached to some of the younger guys coming through.''

Australian RL coach Chris Anderson has backed Sailor by hinting he would consider him for selection for next month's Anzac Test against New Zealand - despite calls for him to be ignored due to his imminent switch of codes.

Despite making himself available for the Kangaroos' tour, Sailor insisted he had not changed his mind over the move to rugby union.

``I've got a letter of intent from the ARU and that's good enough for me,'' Sailor told the official NRL website.

``I don't think I'd walk away from that. There's been too much publicity and media exposure for me to walk away, plus it's something I really want to do.''

Sailor is expected to play in his 14th and last State of Origin game when he lines up for Queensland against New South Wales in Sunday's decider in Brisbane.
