Macqueen to step down following Lions series
July 7, 2001
Wallabies coach Rod Macqueen has revealed he will stand down from his role after the final Test with the Lions next weekend. It was believed that Macqueen would ake way for Eddie Jones, the current ACT Brumbies coach, at the end of this year's Tri Nations in September, but he has decided to bring that forwardtwo months. "I have decided to stand down after the Lions series. I have no regrets, we've got a game to win next week and I am concentrating on that. "It is better to make sure you go a little sooner, rather than a little later. The team didn't know anything until I told them straight after the game." Jones will now be at the helm for the Tri-Nations, and the Australian team are certain to want a big send-off for Macqueen, who masterminded their World Cup triumph in 1999. Australia, like the Lions, didn't escape from today's game injury-free. Wing Andrew Walker suffered a suspected fractured cheekbone, while fly-half Stephen Larkham hurt his arm and full-back Matt Burke suffered a shoulder problem. Wallabies skipper John Eales said: "We wanted to be more competitive in every area today, and we took it upon ourselves to improve in every facet. "We all went out there with the determination to play a lot better than we did in the first Test last Saturday."
Macqueen's record with the Wallabies:
Biggest win: 76-0 v England, Brisbane 1998 |
