Feared broken leg for Wilkinson
July 7, 2001

Lions fly half Jonny Wilkinson may have broken his leg in a clash that forced him from the field during the Lions 2nd Test defeat against Australia.

Wilkinson, who left the action 10 minutes from the end of the 35-14 defeat at the hands of the Wallabies, injured his leg after tackling centre Nathan Grey.

"Jonny Wilkinson has damage to his lower left leg and he's going to hospital for an X-ray," said team manager Donal Lenihan.

Lenihan and coach Graham Henry are hopeful Wilkinson has only suffered bruising and will be available for the deciding 3rd Test in Sydney next weekend.

But if he has a fracture Wilkinson then it is likely Neil Jenkins would fill the No.10 shirt. Alternatively Austin Healey may come in to fly half in a move that may also see Matt Dawson replace Rob Howley to take on the kicking duties.
