Rassie out for a month

A foot injury has ruled Johan Erasmus out of contention for a place in the Springbok team for the away leg of the Tri-Nations.

Erasmus, a shock omission from the Springbok team for the home leg of the competition, sustained a foot injury in training with the Free State team last week and aggravated it playing against the Griffons on Friday night.

Initial medical reports indicate that he will be out for at least a month and that he won't be playing for the Cheetahs in their Currie Cup game next month against the Boland Kavaliers at Wellington.

"His foot has been put in a cast. He is receiving intensive treatment, but rest is what he needs the most now. The only things he is allowed to do are swimming and exercise for his upper body," Cheetahs team doctor Louis Holtzhausen told the Volksblad.

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen was not happy with Erasmus' form in the recent Tests against Italy and France. He said he wanted the talented loose-forward to get back to his best form in the Currie Cup competition and also to follow a scientific fitness program in order to get back to his best physical condition.

Now injury has denied South Africa's most creative loose-forward of the chance to prove Viljoen was wrong by omitting him in the first place.
