Brumbies approach Edmonds
July 19, 2001

The Brumbies are looking to further boost their halves strength by approaching Waratahs and Australia A five-eighth Manuel Edmonds.

The Super 12 champions already have Stephen Larkham and the recently-signed Pat Howard on their books, but are leaving nothing to chance in their 2002 defence.

Edmonds flew to Perth today to join the Wallaby squad as a replacement for the injured Stephen Larkham. The Wallabies meet South Africa in their opening Tri-Nations game in Pretoria on Saturday week.

The Waratahs have added Australian league winger Mat Rogers to their squad for 2002, while Duncan McRae has returned from a stint with England club Saracens. Rogers played at five-eight for the Australian Schoolboys rugby union side.

Coach Bob Dwyer said the Waratahs had offered Edmonds a good package and was determined to keep one of their best players in the 2001 season.

"We have quite a lot of versatility across the backline, which is very necessary," Dwyer said. "We have offered him a good arrangement - it is up to Manny as to where he wants to play.

"We are looking to sign people who are quality players, who fit the club's culture. It doesn't really matter where they come from."

The Brumbies will announce their new coach on October 1. Eleven people had applied for the job with an all-Australian shortlist now down to six.
