No let up for Eddie's Lions tamers
July 19, 2001

The Wallabies may have just claimed a first ever series win over the British Lions but they can expect no let up under new coach Eddie Jones' regime.

With South Africa looming large in the Tri-Nations next week the World Champions have travelled to Perth to prepare under their new coach who took over the reigns from Rod Macqueen this week.

And no amount of praise for how well the Australians were prepared from Lions captain Martin Johnson following that decisive third Test has not persuaded Jones to go easy.

"The area we will really be concentrating on is our training performance. We really want to train with great intensity, not necessarily for long periods of time, but with greater intensity," he said.

"Hopefully then that will transfer into better game performance. Although the result against the Lions was good, I'm sure the whole team would agree they can play much better - and that's going to be our target."

Jones admitted he felt excited and nervous about being in charge of the Australians for the first time and said he expected the Springboks to play a confrontational, physical style of game.

The loss of Stephen Larkham, who was central in Jones' ACT Brumbies set up, has not phased the new coach who said he will need to work with different people and develop a different style

He praised Larkham's replacement, Elton Flatley, for his performance in the third Lions Test and the form of second string five-eighth Manny Edmonds.

"He's shown he's a very capable player and Manny Edmonds has come into the squad and did extremely well for Australia A and NSW against the Lions. So we are well equipped in that area.

"The way the Wallabies played in the third Test really suited the way Flats played, but I'm sure if we need to move the ball a bit more we'll be able to do that."
