Reds sign giant Scottish Aussie

Glasgow Caledonians have signed Nathan Ross, a six foot nine inch second row Australian who qualifies, and says he wants to play, for Scotland.

The 24-year-old, former Queensland U21 and Australia U21 trialist has signed a 2-year contract with the Reds having been persuaded to come to Scotland by Aberdeen GSFP coach Damien Reidy while he was working in Australia.

He has left a banking job in Brisbane to pursue a full-time rugby career and Aberdeen will be his designated club in Scotland after his agent advised him to take up a contract with Glasgow.

"It has always been my ambition to be a professional rugby player and to play International rugby and I was encouraged to pursue my rugby ambitions through my Scottish heritage," he said.

"I qualify to play for Scotland through a paternal grandfather born in Dunfermline and I have been brought up in a family that is proud of its Scottish roots.

"The opportunity to play in Scotland and maybe play for Scotland is a dream for me. I played for Australian Schools against Scottish Schools in the 94/95 season and there are quite a few players from the Scotland team in the current Glasgow squad, such as Jason White, so I feel I already have a connection'.

Ross' rugby CV also includes Queensland and Australian Schools representation and membership of the Queensland Academy of Sport. More recently he was part of the Queensland Reds Development XV and has been playing for his club in first grade Australian Rugby as well as being selected to play for Australian Barbarians on several occasions.

David Jordan, Glasgow Caledonians Chief Executive said: "I am pleased that we have been able to secure the signing of a player of the stature of Nathan. Although he has yet to experience the rigours of professional rugby his physicality will provide our squad with another dimension in the forwards."

Richie Dixon, Glasgow Caledonians coach, said: "We wished to improve the stature of our front five for the hard season ahead and I am delighted that along with Cameron Blades we have been able to add a player of Nathan's physique to our squad."
