NPC: Rush appointed Auckland skipper
July 26, 2001

Xavier Rush has succeeded Paul Thompson as captain of Auckland's NPC side for the forthcoming season.

The 24-year-old who has one cap for New Zealand was appointed by coach Wayne Pivac for what he said were his natural leadership qualities.

A powerful number eight Rush is a former captain of the New Zealand Colts. He claimed his one and only cap in 1998 against Australia in Sydney.

This year the new captain will have two new partners in the back row with the arrival at the club of former Highlander Samiu Vahafolau and Justin Collins, who arrived from Northland.

They replace Andrew Blowers and Dylan Mika who have left to play their rugby overseas.
