July 28, 2001

ITV have secured the rights to the next two rugby union World Cups in a six-year deal with the International Rugby Board.

As well as the 2003 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the 2007 tournament in Europe, ITV will also broadcast the 2005 World Cup Sevens and the World Sevens series, from 2001 to 2005.

ITV will broadcast every match from the next two World Cups via its existing terrestrial service and the new ITV Sport digital channel.

ITV Controller of Sport Brian Barwick said: ``The Rugby World Cup has grown in significance tournament by tournament and we are delighted to seal a new partnership that has rugby as the ultimate winner.

IRB chairman Vernon Pugh added: ``This agreement provides the platform to continue to broaden the appeal of the sport and raise the profile of other tournaments.''

November's round of the World Sevens Series from Dubai will be the first matches to be screened under the new deal.
