The South African Schools team were lucky to hang on for a 23-all draw against the French under-18s in the main curtain-raiser for the Springboks vs Wallabies encounter at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

South Africa, who led 9-8 at the break, won the series 1-0 after defeating the French 36-15 in Cape Town last week, although the visitors will look back at a couple of missed opportunities at goal which would have levelled the series.

The match was a scrappy affair with the French pulling level at the death via a penalty by flyhalf Nicolas Rondet.

South African captain and flank Luke Watson played well, scoring his side's first try, while flyhalf Derick Hougaardt kicked five out five, slotting three penalties and two conversions. For the visitors centre Pierre Garcia scored a second half brace.

In an earlier game played at Loftus, the Ussasa Academy team defeated the Australian Aboriginal team 67-0.
