Giffin cited
July 29, 2001

Australian second-rower David Giffin is facing a 30 day suspension if found guilty of striking Springbok vice-captain Robbie Fleck during their Tri-Nations clash overnight.

Giffin, recalled to the side after missing the final Test against the Lions due to injury, was cited after the match by New Zealand official David Grey.

The incident happened just before half-time when Fleck was hit in the jaw by a Giffin punch leaving the South African dazed.

During the ensuing passage of play the Springboks breached the Wallabies defence when a pass by scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen allowed captain Bobby Skinstad to cross the try-line next to the corner flag.
