Barclay set for his Bath chance
August 8, 2001

England's international man of mystery could soon find himself the focus of attention for his club Bath as the build up to the new season continues.

The 19-year-old fly half was a virtual unknown when he was plucked from New Zealand side Marist-Albion to tour North America with England.

But critically acclaimed performances on that tour and an injury to incumbent Bath fly half Mike Catt should mean he will get his chance with the west country outfit sooner rather than later.

As he set off for Ireland this week with the club for its pre-season clash with Munster and London Wasps he was, however, playing down his chances.

"I will just have to keep my fingers crossed and see what happens," he told the Bath Chronicle.

Barclay has yet to make his senior debut for Bath when he although he had trained with members of the clubs senior side before setting off for the southern hemisphere.

Lions and England lock Danny Grewcock her resumed training and also joined the Ireland trip but will not play.

Meanwhile the club has announced encouraging financial news with the club moving towards profitability, boosted by the recent agreement with the RFU.

General manager Bob Calleja said that the club has already made substantial reductions in operating costs as the club looks to redevelop the Rec.
